The main trunk line could be closed until tomorrow after a derailment south of Whangarei early on Saturday.
A nine-wagon freight train jumped the tracks inside a tunnel near Maungataroto about 3.15am.
Four of the nine wagons were carrying general freight, the remainder were empty, Toll NZ spokeswoman Sue Foley said.
Up to five freight services could be cancelled.
