Deportation order for man who beat, deafened wife

A Timaru meat worker convicted of beating his wife as she held their baby daughter will be deported.

Jone Vuetaki, 26, was given an opportunity to leave the country voluntarily after he was sentenced to community work for assaulting his wife earlier this month.

However, he has now been served a deportation order and will be removed from the country and sent back to Fiji, where he was born and raised.

Earlier this month the Herald revealed that Vuetaki had been sentenced to 130 hours' community service for a violent attack on his wife that left her with a perforated eardrum.
She was holding the couple's 9-month-old baby during the incident.

Immigration New Zealand then revealed that Vuetaki had been in New Zealand illegally since March.

A spokesman said Vuetaki was invited to leave the country voluntarily.
However he did not and the deportation order was served.

The INZ spokesman said for "privacy and operational reasons" he could not confirm when Vuetaki would be deported.

Vuetaki's victim, now his ex wife, was relieved to hear the news of his deportation.

She had been supporting him in an application for permanent residency, but withdrew her backing after the assault.
