The Democrats may be down but they are not out, says leader Grant Gillon.
The party lost its two sitting MPs - Mr Gillon and John Wright - in the poor showing of Jim Anderton's Progressive Coalition in the election.
The Democrats sided with Mr Anderton after his bitter split from the Alliance this year and joined the party he subsequently formed, the Progressive Coalition.
Mr Gillon was firm that the result did not spell the end of the Democrats.
"Absolutely not. We haven't really thought much past working this week and next week through and we're not in a hurry to do anything."
He believed the Democrats would continue to support the Progressive Coalition.
