White Swan Greytown belied their local league status with a strong performance against Capital two side Waikanae at Greytown on Monday.
Waikanae won the Chatham Cup elimination match 3-1 but had to work hard to get the better of a Greytown side which were level pegging at 0-0 at halftime and 1-all early in the second half.
Waikanae scored first from a questionable penalty, but Greytown had its own share of good luck, equalising when the visitors conceded an own goal.
Watched by a vocal crowd, which ensured Waikanae knew they were in enemy territory, the match produced a pleasing standard of football. Despite the wet conditions, both teams adopted an aggressive approach, particularly on defence.
Greytown's 15-year-old goalkeeper Mitchell Ellicock was outstanding, showing an impressive calmness under pressure. Others to stand out were player-coach Chris James and Keiran McGruddy.
Douglas Villa also bowed out of the Chatham Cup on Monday, losing their first round match with Stokes Valley 3-1 after being down 2-1 at halftime.
Coach Ricky Riddell said Villa struggled to retain possession and there had been a lack of continuity in their attacking play. They were also in catch-up mode for most of the game after Stokes Valley posted two early goals.
Midfielder Michael Kempson was the pick of the Douglas Villa players and their goal was scored by Daniel Delara-Bell.
