Wairarapa United will look back on their 3-2 loss to Waterside-Karori in their Ivan England Trophy under-19 men's promotion-relegation soccer match at Howard Booth Park, Carterton on Saturday as the "one that got away".
Some costly defensive lapses saw Wairarapa United, who earned the right to play this match after winning the second division of the trophy competition, trail 3-0 at the break despite them having the better of the game from both a territorial and possession viewpoint and while they tightened up their defence in the second spell they could not quite the bridge the gap.
"I'd hate to think how many shots at goal we had & probably enough to win two or three matches", Wairarapa United coach Phil Keinzley said. "It was just one of those days when the ball wouldn't go in the back of the net."
Keinzley was happy, however, with the manner in which Wairarapa United created their ample scoring opportunities with the slickness of their passing often catching the Waterside-Karori defence on the hop.
Ryan Athow and Anton Ross were the goal scorers with Athow, Alex Wardell, Aaron Spierling and Thomas Hemi being the standout players.
Wairarapa United and Waterside-Karori will clash again during the national under-19 club tournament to be hosted by Napier City Rovers over Labour Weekend and Keinzley is confident his side can turn the tables there.
