A West Coast man who has already admitted attacking a tourist with a hammer during a road rage attack now says he cannot recall using the tool as a weapon.
Hayden Christopher Greene, 38, and Michael Kevin Isabeth, 29, both of Karoro, previously admitted attacking an Australian national, Chehan Lasika Senasekera, at Greymouth on December 13. Greene pleaded guilty to common assault and Isabeth to assault with intent to injure.
They were to be sentenced yesterday in the Greymouth District Court, but that was deferred to June 4 to give Isabeth a chance to find an address suitable for a home detention sentence.
Lawyer Richard Bodle said Isabeth now disputed the fact that he used a hammer but did not intend taking it further. If he had demanded a disputed facts hearing the victim would have to be brought back from Australia.
Judge Gary MacAskill said he was not prepared to sentence the offenders separately in case their stories conflicted.
