Defensive lapses cost Wairarapa United dearly in their 4-3 loss to Wellington United in a Capital first division men'ssoccer match played in Wellington on Saturday.
Coach Phil Keinzley described all four goals scored by Wellington United as "soft", saying they were more the fault of his own defence than any good play on Wellington United's part.
"There was some poor decision making on defence and we didn't keep our composure well there either," he said.
Even so Wairarapa United was often in a position to win the game, leading three times before Wellington United drew level at 3-3 and then scored the winning goal with six minutes of play left.
"From midfield through to the forward line we definitely had the better of them", Keinzley said. "But when you keep giving goals away at the other end it's tough to keep your noses in front, isn't it?."
Troy Burling, Andy Taylor and Murray Burling were standout players for Wairarapa United while in the second half, in particular, Fijian duo Peta Rabo and Sakeo Valevou made their presence felt in attacking situations.
The match was controlled by a 17-year-old Wellington-based referee and Keinzley was lavish in his praise of his officiating. "We have no complains whatsoever in that respect,' he said.
Valevou, Taylor and Paul Watkinson were the scorers for Wairarapa United who despite their loss still lie second being Western Suburbs on the competition table. They are even on points with Wellington United but have the better goal differential.
