Children and teachers at a Wellington school had an exciting morning when a New Zealand Defence Force helicopter landed in their playground as an end-of-term treat.
The Kaman Seasprite SH-2G(I) helicopter from the Air Force's 6 Squadron touched down at Cashmere Avenue School in Khandallah on Friday morning while on its way back to Auckland after taking part in Exercise Bluebird in the South Island.
Observer Lieutenant Commander Julie MacLean was on board. Her two children, India, 7, and Jacob, 9, attend the school.
She and the crew stayed for questions, and allowed children to see the helicopter up close, before it headed off for a visit to Karori Normal School.
"We haven't brought missiles to school," MacLean told one hopeful Cashmere pupil. "We might get told off."
