Defence House in Wellington will be demolished by early next year after sustaining significant earthquake damage.
Freyberg House, commonly known as Defence House, suffered damage in the Kaikoura earthquake in November 2016.
The building's owner, AMP Capital, announced today the demolition plan had been approved following a comprehensive consultation process with the Wellington City Council.
The process confirmed a strategy that minimised inconvenience and ensured the safety of the public, a spokesman for AMP said.
Fletcher Construction has been appointed to carry out the demolition by means
of "deconstruction" in a controlled manner.
