A wide area of the North Island was shaken last night by a deep-seated earthquake.
The quake, which struck at 9.45pm, was at a depth of 150km, and registered 5.5 on the Richter scale.
It was centred within 5km of Rotorua, but was felt as far away as Gisborne.
Police last night said no reports of damage or injury had been received.
