KEY POINTS:
The number of new housing units being authorised is still declining, with the past five months all showing a decrease, Statistics New Zealand (SNZ) said today.
Their figures show that in November there were 2189 housing units authorised, compared with 2232 in November 2006.
SNZ said in November 2007, there were 53 fewer housing units authorised in the North Island and 10 more authorised in the South Island, compared with November 2006.
Half of the 16 regions had authorised fewer units.
New apartment unit consents had also declined, with 66 consents issued in November - 113 fewer than in November the previous year.
SNZ said although the trend for the value of residential buildings was in decline, residential building consents had increased 4.2 per cent to $695 million from November 2006.
Non-residential building consents, especially hospitals and nursing homes, had increased by 6.7 per cent to $401 million from November 2006 to November 2007.
