Act leader David Seymour is asking Prime Minister John Key to postpone the first referendum on a new flag until after Christmas to give families a chance to discuss and fly their favourite flag over the summer break.
Mr Seymour supports the Red Peak flag being one of the options and says there appears to be a generational divide on the issue, with younger New Zealanders supporting it.
He says the four options should be revised early in the New Year.
"We can then debate the flag options over the Christmas break, over our backyard barbecues. We can fly our preferred flag on the beach, from the bach, whatever," he said in his weekly newsletter. "But let's have a national conversation about our options, and do it at that one time of the year when families and the generations get together."
Mr Seymour said it was by no means the most important issue facing the Government "but if it's worth doing, it's worth doing well".
