A 52-year-old man has been arrested after the death of a sea lion.
The sea lion was killed in the village of Portobello in the Dunedin Harbour on November 5 last year.
The man has been charged with wilful mistreatment of an animal, under the Animal Welfare Act 1999 and is scheduled to appear in Dunedin District Court on Friday.
Police said in a statement the arrest was the result of a joint investigation between Dunedin police, the Department of Conservation and the Dunedin Sea Lion Trust.
They said that because the matter was now before the court, they could not provide further comment.
