KEY POINTS:
Police today named a Manawatu 16-year-old killed in what appears to have been a crash involving two cars racing at the weekend.
Christopher Lee Johnson, of Palmerston North, was a passenger in one of two vehicles travelling at speed on a straight road on the outskirts of the city on Saturday afternoon.
Police said both cars swerved to avoid a cyclist and one of the vehicles crashed into a drain, killing Mr Johnson.
The driver of the vehicle received minor injuries and the cyclist was not injured, police said.
The serious crash unit was investigating.
It was one of three deaths on the roads over the weekend.
A man was killed in Rotorua at about 9.30pm on Saturday.

The crash, which involved one vehicle with three occupants, was being investigated and police wanted to hear from any witnesses.
On Friday night a man was killed while trying to cross an Auckland motorway.
