The third and final round of the Clareville Trophy was played by the men of the Carterton Golf Club last Saturday, April 15.
This trophy is decided over the best two of three rounds of par competition.
The winner of the Trophy for 2006 was Dean Schaef whose two best scores were plus five and plus four for a plus nine total over his two best rounds.
Mark Graham was the runner-up in the trophy race with his score of plus eight.
This result differs from that announced in the clubhouse last Saturday but is correct and verified by a careful post-play check.
In Saturday's par round Russ Morgan finished plus four to win the lower handicap group, but only on countback from Mark Graham, on the same score.
John Lett's plus three claimed third place with both Pat Carew and Nigel Bain finishing on plus two.
In the higher handicap division Brayden Mazey was a clear winner with his plus eight score from Peter Mallitte on plus six.
Four players ? John Braiden, Ian Brinkworth, Ash Braggins and Dean Schaef ? all returned plus four totals.
The Marquis of Normanby Hotel Men's Nearest the Pin on hole nine was won by Russ Morgan while the "All Teed Up" ball for the nineteen plus handicap group was won by John Braiden.
David Ross was the only man to achieve a hole in two on the day.
WOMEN ? SATURDAY:
The competition for the women on Saturday, April 15, was stableford, round two of the Stubbs Cup competition.
The best score was posted by Pauline Craig, her 37 points being just one better than that posted by Barbara Birchall.
Vicki Bain, Kate Keen and Anne Ross all returned 35 points while both Suzanne Fuller and Val Edwards scored 34.
The New World Carterton Women's Nearest the Pin contest was won by Anne Ross and the "All Teed Up" ball by Caral Rink.
The women did much better than the men with three players ? Barbara Birchall, Emma Wills and Val Edwards ? all scoring holes in two.
EASTER MONDAY TOURNAMENT:
A "mini tournament" held on Easter Monday attracted a satisfactory field with the best stableford scores being achieved by the leaders in the higher handicap men's field.
Two of the younger players of the club ? Adam Birchall and Brayden Mazey ? had to be separated by the countback system with both players scoring 46 points. Adam won the division, on countback, Brayden was second, and Peter Mallitte third in this division with 40 points.
Dean Schaef scored 37 and three players ? Allan Heffer, Bernie O'Brien and Wayne Taylor ? all scored 36.
Tom Bingham won the lower handicap group with his 43 point total from Tony McCarthy and Russ Sadler, both on 40.
Both Craig Wilson and Wayne Evans compiled 38 points, Barry Bentley, 37, while both George Rink and Mike Newport scored 36.
Suzanne Fuller headed the women's division with 38 points from both Lesley Sadler and Barbara Birchall on 36. Both Marge Robson and Caral Rink scored 35 and the starter for the day, Anne Brewer, filled sixth place with 34.
Nearest the pin prizes were won by Barry Bentley, on hole nine, Brayden Mazey, on hole 12, and Tim Druzianic, on hole 15.
Holes in two were scored by Barry Bentley, Tim Druzianic and Stu Ingham.
VETERANS ? TUESDAY:
Round three of the autumn cup was the order of the day for the veterans group on Tuesday, April 18 and Bernie O'Brien continued his good weekend form to win the day with 41 points.
John Lett, Tim Carr and Ray White all scored 40 points, Joe Skillcorn, 39, and both Brian Craig and Matt Casey, 38.
Because next Tuesday is ANZAC Day, and there will be no veterans competition that day, the scores also count for the 12,000 Mile Challenge, the annual competition between the Carterton veterans and the Saints and Sinners group of the St Augustines Golf Club in Kent, England.
The Carterton players did reasonably well, scoring 556 points for their best fifteen players, but the Saints and Sinners will play their leg next Monday and it will only be after that time that the result of the battle for this year will be known.
WOMEN ? WEDNESDAY:
A visitor from Canada who can only play golf four months of the year (makes you realize just how lucky we all are), and players from Martinborough, Te Marua, Masterton, Riversdale and Carterton made up the field of 59 last Wednesday for Carterton Womens Golf Open Day. The weather was almost perfect, but a quick moving rogue shower had everyone reaching for the wet weather gear with three holes to go.
This year the prize table went to:
the Yule Cup for the best gross went to Kris Chamberlain of Martinborough;
the Elsma Hurley Salver for the best nett went to Vicki Bain of Carterton;
the Suffrage Cup (which is played for by Carterton members only) for the best stableford, went to Margaret Thompson.
It was an enjoyable day and Carterton Womens Golf thanks everyone for the continued support for these annual events.
FOOTNOTE:
Golf is definitely a game of millimeters and degrees.
On Monday Barry Bentley won the prize for being nearest to the pin on hole nine.
This hole, for the men, is over 180 meters in length, with a crowned green, and it is very common for no player in a four to be able to hit, and hold, the green.
Barry's tee shot finished no more than 30 centimeters away and was rolling on a line directly for the hole when it ran out of steam.
Just how much more power would have been needed for the shot to have finished in the hole? Very little indeed, would be my opinion.
And, yes, like most golfers, Barry is yet to achieve that most elusive "ace".
