A teenager who killed a 4-year-old girl when his speeding car crashed at Rangiriri has been kicked out of the country.
Ding Yan Zhao, a 19-year-old Chinese national, left New Zealand on Wednesday after serving six months of a 12-month sentence.
He was originally jailed for two years after his car careered into a service station, killing Georgia McCarten-Graham and injuring her father, Cameron.
The case drew widespread criticism after Zhao's sentence was halved because his family offered $40,000 to Georgia's family.
The Immigration Service confirmed yesterday that Zhao finished his jail sentence, was served with a removal notice, and left on Wednesday.
Relatives on both sides of Georgia's family said yesterday that their business with Zhao was done, and they just wanted to move on with their lives.
One grandfather, Rex Graham, did not know Zhao had been released until told by the Herald."It's over now, he's gone. As far as we're concerned, our relationship with him and our concern with him is over," Mr Graham said.
Asked about the brevity of Zhao's sentence, Georgia's other grandfather, John McCarten, said, "That's the law".
