Deadline near to register for Greytown poll

VOTE: It's time to get enrolled for the Greytown by-election.

Time is running out for residents to ensure they will be able to vote in the Greytown by-election.

A space on the Greytown Community Board was left vacant by Kay Gray, who stepped down for health reasons and died shortly after her resignation.

The by-election will be held next year on February 11 but people must be on the electoral roll by next Monday, December 16.

"Only those people who are correctly enrolled by the time the electoral roll has closed will get voting papers in the mail to vote in the Greytown byelection," said Philip Parkes, registrar of electors for the Wairarapa electorate.

At present, 2597 of Greytown electors are enrolled to vote in the by-election.

There are three other board members elected for South Wairarapa District Council's Greytown board - Shane Atkinson, Leigh Hay and Christine Stevenson.

Nominee Frank Minehan missed out by 132 votes.

Nominations for the roll were called for in November and the council said there were "maybe one or two" nominations so far.

People can get an enrolment form by calling 0800 36 76 56, free-texting their name and address to 3676, or requesting or downloading one from the elections website at www.elections.org.nz or at any PostShop.

Mr Parkes said, because the details of people on the unpublished roll were confidential, electors on that roll should contact the Greytown electoral officer directly to get information on how to apply to cast a special vote.
