KEY POINTS:
The woman whose body was found on a road near Rotorua early today was possibly hit by a vehicle, police say.
A motorist on State Highway 33, between Rotorua and Okere Falls, called emergency services to the scene about 4.25am.
Police have not yet worked out how the woman died, but it was apparent she had suffered injuries.
She was dead when found.
There was a strong possibility she had been hit by a vehicle, Detective Sergeant George Staunton said in a statement.
Police would make any further comment.
The serious crash unit is examining the scene and police would like to speak to motorists who travelled SH33 between 2am and 3am.
Police will not release the woman's name until tomorrow, after family members have been notified.
