Dead woman found in car 'unexplained'

Police say the death of a 44-year-old woman found in a car in the Bay of Plenty yesterday is still "unexplained".

Police were called to a property at Te Puna, 11km west of Tauranga, by relatives of the woman yesterday morning at 9am.

Detective Sergeant Eddie Lyttle confirmed that there appeared to have been a fire in the car, but said they still didn't know how she died.

While initially it was treated as suspicious, "we have spent the whole day there and now it's more unexplained than suspicious".

Police hoped to know more after a postmortem examination today.
