Police have named a 49-year-old Te Horo man who died last night after he lost control of his car near Otaki.
Paul Davies died when his car left the road about 10.55pm on Otaki Gorge Road, 7km south of Otaki.
The serious crash unit was still investigating, said Otaki Sergeant Noel Bigwood.
Mr Davies had been travelling east along the straight road when he lost control, rolling the vehicle into a paddock being used as an airstrip on the opposite side of the road.
There was no sign of stock in the area, and the conditions were good, Mr Bigwood said.
Mr Davies was the sole occupant of the vehicle and died at the scene.
