KEY POINTS:
Police have named the prisoner who died at Kaitoke Prison.
Inspector Duncan MacLeod said James Koteraki Kahu, 36, died in the prison's nursery compound late on Wednesday morning.
There were circumstances surrounding Kahu's death which meant police would be investigating the events leading up to it, he said.
"The circumstances are such that police will be taking a closer look at the matter, speaking with witnesses who include inmates and staff to establish exact details," he said.
A post-mortem was being carried out in Wellington today.
A small inquiry team had been formed, and the results of the post-mortem would help determine the direction of its investigation, he added.
Mr MacLeod said a scene examination was also being conducted by Environmental Science and Research forensic staff.
