KEY POINTS:
The pedestrian killed when hit by a truck yesterday may have been walking down the centre of the road.
Raymond Desmond Hoko, 40, died about 7am yesterday at Te Hana, near Wellsford north of Auckland.
The driver stopped and police said although a decision had yet to be made on charges, it appeared Mr Hoko had been drinking and was on the road when hit.
His death brought to two those killed on the roads over the weekend.
On Saturday a speeding, out-of-control and unregistered car collided with another vehicle, killing one person and seriously injuring another on Somme Parade in Wanganui.
Immediately after the 4.30pm collision, the driver and his passenger abandoned the wrecked car and fled the scene, witnesses told Wanganui police.
Constable Craig Gorringe said police had already stripped registration from the car -- a Ford Fairmont -- and had dealt with the owner previously.
They had contacted the person who was using the vehicle at the time of the crash, but at this stage, he refused to speak formally with police.
The silver Ford Fairmont was allegedly speeding along Somme Parade, heading towards the city, when the driver lost control and crossed the centre line, Mr Gorringe said.
The car crossed into the path of a Honda Civic carrying two people and the two cars smashed into each other head-on.
A woman died at the scene, and a man was taken to Wanganui Base Hospital in a critical but stable condition.
Witnesses say the Fairmont was travelling well over the 50km/h speed limit, as well as dangerously passing several vehicles on the road before the crash.
Police are appealing for witnesses.
