Police have named the German tourist killed when hit by a truck as she biked along State Highway 3, near Bulls, on Tuesday.
Mia Susanne Pusch, 19, from Fulda, in Germany, arrived in New Zealand in October and was travelling alone, police understood.
They did not know where in the country she had been, or whether she had been cycling during the whole of her visit.
The German embassy helped police locate and notify her parents, who were said to be distraught.
The cause of the crash, around 11.50am in a passing zone, was still being investigated.
Police would like to hear from anyone who was on the stretch of road between Bulls and Lake Alice on Tuesday, who saw either Ms Pusch on her bike or a yellow truck and trailer unit.
