The wife of convicted fraudster John Davy broke her silence on their relationship before leaving the country yesterday.
Josephine Davy, 32, told the New Zealand Woman's Weekly she loved Davy more than ever and he had apologised for "putting me through this".
She has returned to the Philippines and Davy will be deported to Canada this week.
Mrs Davy told the magazine the sentence on her 51-year-old husband was too harsh.
Davy was sentenced to six months in prison for lying to get the top Maori TV job.
"He's a good man - he just lied on his CV," she said.
"John said he was sorry for putting me through this. He was in tears, but I was never angry with him."
The pair plan to hold another wedding ceremony with friends and family when they are reunited.
Mrs Davy said she had not seen any of the country and would like to return to New Zealand one day.
Davy earned $16 a week washing pots and making sandwiches in Paremoremo prison, she said.
Mrs Davy said in the article that she was looking forward to seeing her two children, aged 15 and 12, from a previous relationship. They live with her family in the Philippines.
She was unsure when she and her husband would be reunited.
"Maybe he will come to the Philippines - we just don't know. I can only go to Canada if John sponsors me and that means he must get a job.
"He says he will do anything - anything at all."
