Canadian fraudster John Davy has been denied bail as he awaits a court hearing to appeal his eight-month prison sentence.
Davy was jailed in the Auckland District Court on Wednesday after admitting falsifying details on the resume he supplied with his job application to the Maori Television Service.
Davy was appointed chief executive earlier this year but sacked only six weeks later when it was found he did not have the degrees and university education he had claimed on his resume.
However his lawyer, Kiah Barron-Akeake, lodged an appeal yesterday against the sentence, saying it was unfair and excessive.
In the meantime, he asked Judge Phil Moran, the Invercargill judge who sat at the Auckland hearing on Wednesday, to grant Davy bail as he awaited the appeal hearing.
The judge refused the application, but Mr Barron-Afeaki said on the positive side, an early date was set for the appeal. It will now be heard in the High Court in Auckland next Friday.
Mr Barron-Afeaki said Davy was still in shock at the severity of the sentence, but was coping and was not suicidal. He expects him to stay at Mt Eden remand prison in central Auckland until the appeal hearing.
