Central defender Petero Dauniseka was the toast of Wairarapa United after they had come from 2-0 down to beat Brooklyn Northern United 3-2 in their Capital Soccer premier division match played in Wellington on Saturday.
Dauniseka scored all three of Wairarapa United's goals in the last 15 minutes of the game, and they were spectacular affairs. The first of them came after Dauniseka eluded a number of defenders and passed to striker Pita Rabo in the penalty box. Rabo looked in a position to shoot himself but elected to pass back to Dauniseka and he made no mistake with his shot. The second goal was the result of a powerful volley high into the top corner of the net and the third came when Dauniseka latched onto a ball about 40 metres out and gave the 'keeper no chance with a rocket-like strike. The three goals meant Wairarapa United avoided the embarrassment of being the first team defeated by BNU this season although manager Phil Keinzley said BNU had actually offered sterner opposition that several of the other premier division sides.
"The ground was very heavy and while we did a lot of the attacking, especially in the second half, they never made it easy for us," Keinzley said. Not surprisingly, Dauniseka was man of the match for Wairarapa United, not only because of his three goals but because of his solid all-round play as well. Guiseppe Cugliari and Lai Gataurua both impressed in the midfield and Anton Ross made a number of penetrating runs down his flank. Saturday's win moved Wairarapa United into fifth place on the premier division table and because they have four games still to play compared to the two for most other sides they are still a chance for the runners-up spot behind Petone.
