KEY POINTS:
Police are keeping an open mind on a possible date-rape drug connection after two scantily clad teenage girls were left unconscious on an Auckland pavement, apparently from an overdose of booze, party pills and P.
One witness told the Herald on Sunday he feared the 18-year-old and 19-year-old had died after collapsing at 10.30am on Friday in Devonport's King Edward Parade. Police believe the girls were dropped off by two young men in a car.
Senior sergeant Matt Broderick, of North Shore police, said a man had been charged with a drug offence, although he refused to elaborate. Another man is still being sought.
The girls were taken to North Shore Hospital in a critical condition. They were still there yesterday afternoon, but staff said they were likely to be discharged soon.
Broderick believed the drug-taking which led to the overdose was "consensual", but interviews with the girls had not been completed.
Police are investigating if date-rape drugs were involved.
