KEY POINTS:
Police are investigating whether date-rape drugs were involved in the case of two teenage girls found sprawled and abandoned on a North Shore footpath yesterday morning.
The girls, aged 18 and 19, were last night being interviewed by detectives. They were in a serious condition in North Shore Hospital.
Toxicology tests have been taken to establish what substances were in the girls' systems and results are expected within days, police said last night.
Initial reports suggested the girls had overdosed on party pills, but the Weekend Herald understands police are now investigating whether harder drugs, including date-rape-style drugs such as GHB - more commonly called Fantasy - were involved.
The girls were dumped from a car about 11am yesterday on a seaside street in Devonport.
A man was seen to pull up in a car and assist one of the girls from the vehicle. The other got out unaided.
He stayed with them a short time, then left.
Nearby residents called emergency services. Police found the car abandoned in a Takapuna street.
The man went to the police soon after and told them the girls had taken too many party pills.
Police said last night the man was continuing to assist them with their inquiries. It was too early to say if he would be charged.
It is believed he was still in police custody.
North Shore Senior Sergeant Jennifer Richardson said the man "apparently assisted one of them out, the other got out under her own steam - he stayed with them for a short time and then left".
Gamma-hydroxybutyrate (GHB) is a liquid sedative. It was banned in 2002, and is classified as a high-risk class-B drug.
