KEY POINTS:
The locals may not be putting their hands up, but plenty of others are keen to work at Dannevirke's new brothel, its madam says.
Promiscuous Girlz opens in one of the town's most distinguished buildings on Friday, much to the disgust of some of the town's residents, and owner Teresa McGregor says it has been easy to get job applicants.
"Oh man, we have just had heaps of response. It's been much easier than I thought," she told the Manawatu Standard.
They had come from "everywhere - everywhere but Dannevirke".
"People seem to be quite keen to come here, so I am quite surprised."
Ms McGregor will run the operation out of the Public Trust building on the main street, which locals have described as having historically been a building of integrity.
The Tararua District Council never expected to have to deal with a consent application to run a brothel, and as a result had no legislation in place to rule against one or put special conditions in place to keep one out of the central business district.
A petition was signed by several hundred locals opposing the brothel, but the council had little option but to approve it last month.
One local even said she was going to sit outside it and do her knitting while taking note of patrons, but backed off after claiming she had been threatened.
Ms McGregor said expectant patrons had been pre-booking in anticipation of the opening.
"I have got a few bookings, so things are looking good. A few's better than none I tell myself, so fingers crossed."
She said she had not taken much notice of any ill-feeling towards her business.
