Wairarapa tennis ace Marcus Daniell came close to upsetting Davis Cup squad member GD Jones in the semi-final of the NZLTA "money tournament" in Christchurch over the weekend.
It was the first time Daniell and Jones had clashed and while Jones, who is some 200 places ahead of Daniell on the world rankings, started hot favourite he was made to work overtime by Daniell before winning in three sets, 6-4, 6-7, 6-3.
The energy expended by Jones in that match told on him in the final where he was easily defeated by fellow Davis Cup squad member Daniel King-Turner.
Daniell had earlier beaten World Youth Olympic doubles champion Logan McKenzie in the quarter-finals by the convincing scoreline of 6-1, 6-2.
His impressive showing in Christchurch was the continuation of some superb form by Daniell on the "money tournament" circuit.
Beforehand he had won the singles title at Hawera and then was eliminated in the singles semi-finals at Blenheim, an event won by GD Jones.
