Parents and pet owners are being warned by the AA to be vigilant over the holidays to avoid accidentally locking children and animals inside vehicles.
In the year to November 30, the AA attended 1574 emergency callouts to rescue children and pets from vehicles.
There were 914 involving children and 660 involving pets, with on average just over 130 emergency lockouts every month, said John Healy, AA roadservice national manager.
