KEY POINTS:
One of two dangerous prisoners who fled from the Te Awamutu District Court cells has been caught after a short chase on foot by police.
Anthony Taka was recognised by a policeman in Manurewa, South Auckland on Monday.
After the policeman alerted colleagues, Taka was chased on foot by another policeman and caught.
He appeared in the Manukau District Court yesterday and was remanded in custody to the Te Awamutu District Court on May 13, where he would face a charge of escaping from custody on February 21 and other charges.
Another prisoner, Daniel Minogue, who escaped at the same time as Taka, was still on the run, said Detective Sergeant Ross Patterson of Te Awamutu police.
He was considered to be dangerous and Mr Patterson said he should not be approached.
He had been seen in the Taupo area but may be in the Bay of Plenty area or still around Taupo or Turangi, Mr Patterson said.
Minogue from the Rotorua-Taupo area, was a Maori, about 183cm tall, of slim build with an 8cm wide mohawk haircut.
