Driving at speeds of 140km/h in a 50km/h speed zone on a residential street, Joshua Tyler Campbell placed the public in danger. He was caught by police only when he sped down a dead-end street.
The 20-year-old pleaded guilty to two counts of dangerous driving, loss of sustained traction and failing to stop for police when he appeared before Judge Arthur Tompkins in Masterton District Court on Monday and was denied bail.
Police prosecutor Sergeant Jodie Lawrence said on March 1, police received complaints from people about a car being driven at speed up and down Queen St doing "donuts" and wheel spins at roundabouts on both Dixon and Queen Sts and braking heavily before heading on to South Rd where the car being driven by Campbell "slid sideways" in a "cloud of smoke" and came to a halt next to a power substation box on South Rd.
"He was driving at speeds of 100km on the wrong side of the road." Then about 11.20pm on March 29, Campbell was seen by police riding a motorcycle on Harley St and they tried to stop him but he drove off at speed, Ms Lawrence said. "He accelerated to 140km in a 50km area. He rode down a dead-end street."
Defence lawyer Peter Stevens said "surprisingly" his client was employed as a forestry worker but "he has got to learn a lesson about driving. They were acts of stupidity".
