Hundreds of fraudulent driver's licences may have been issued to New Zealand motorists.
This week alone 49 fraudulent driver and heavy truck licences have been revoked, One News reported this evening.
The network understood hundreds of fraudulent licences have been issued, raising serious questions about public safety, but the NZ Transport Agency could not say how many are out there.
"Our priority focus has been to identify any fraudulent licence holders. It's important that we get drivers off the road that shouldn't hold a licence and that's what we're working on now," the agency's access and use group manager Celia Patrick said.
A damning review by KPMG into the licensing system found frontline staff weren't properly trained to accurately process applications and agents and applicants can cheat on practical and theory tests.
