Wet weather is predicted to dampen New Year's Eve celebrations today as police and emergency services prepare to cope with revellers in popular party towns.
Rain will cover most of the North Island, says the MetService, turning into heavy rain and possible thunderstorms in Auckland, Whangarei, Tauranga and Hamilton. Holidaymakers in Gisborne, Mt Maunganui, Whitianga and Whangamata should also expect showers, which should ease in the evening.
Extra police officers and St John staff have been called in to the Coromandel, Bay of Plenty and the East Coast to control rising numbers at the popular spots. Inspector Mike Clement, Western Bay of Plenty commander, said police would crack down early on alcohol abuse.
"We don't make any apologies for taking a hard line in this area if it means we can reduce the impact," he said. St John staff are also preparing for a busy night in Gisborne at the Rhythm and Vines festival, which has attracted 22,000 people.
