Dalefield might have beaten Hutt 6-0 in their Wellington premier division women's hockey match but players and management had mixed feelings about their overall performance.
Coach Nigel Goodin was happy the objective of a win with the bonus point for scoring three or more goals had been achieved but he was quick to add that if Dalefield had played to anything like their potential the scoreline would have been much different.
"We probably should have won by double what we did, and that's being kind to Hutt," Goodin said. "Unfortunately we dropped down to their standards, it got pretty ugly at times."
Dalefield opened the scoring early in the first half when Janeen Bruce converted a penalty stroke and by halftime they led by 4-0.
They also managed the only two goals of a second half which saw numerous prime scoring chances squandered through poor teamwork.
Right half George Burton was a standout player for Dalefield along with left half Norma Stein and forward Ana May-Playle who scored a hat-trick of goals. Other scorers were Bruce, Burton and Leah Kershaw.
Dalefield gave Hutt something to think about in their Wellington premier division men's hockey match, trailing by just 1-2 at halftime before being beaten 7-2. Coach Mark Fenwick said Dalefield had played some of their best hockey of the season during a first half in which they gave as good as they received but Hutt had capitalised on lapses of concentration in the second spell.
"We relaxed and started ball watching for about 10 minutes and they were able to get away from us," Fenwick said. "Apart from that there wasn't a lot in it."
The game was a physical affair with four players, two from each side, spending time in the sin bin. Ben Van Woerkom and Rowan Yeo had big games for Dalefield whose goals were scored by Yeo and Willie Waitere.
