Dalefield played some of their best hockey of the season in the first half of their Wellington premier division men's hockey match with Hutt at Wellington's National Hockey Stadium on Saturday, yet were still on the end of an 8-0 defeat.
Player-coach Willie Schaefer said after conceding a couple of "pretty soft" goals early in the first half, Dalefield had actually taken the game to Hutt and came close to scoring on several occasions.
"Even their coach thought we should have been a couple of goals up at the break but we just couldn't get the ball into the back of the net," Schaefer said. "We played some really good hockey but I guess it's the old story, if you don't score goals you don't win matches."
Schaefer said Dalefield were guilty of dropping their heads to some degree in the second spell - as much through frustration as anything else - and Hutt were quick to capitalise. "Things did get a bit ugly for us, we lost focus a bit and you can't do that at this level. If you let teams get on a roll they'll punish you big time"
There will be no game for Dalefield over Queen's Birthday.
