Dalefield are thirsting for revenge in their Wellington premier division hockey match with Victoria University at Clareville tomorrow.
The last time the two teams met Dalefield lost by 4-2 after leading 2-1 at halftime and produced what coach Nigel Goodin recalls as their worst performance of the season to date in the process.
"We were pretty ordinary, we didn't put our own goals away and we gave them two or three easy ones," he said. "It was one of those games you want to forget..
At the same time, however, Goodin isn't under-rating a Victoria University side who have a number of promising youngsters in their squad, and who are especially dangerous on the counter attack.
"You have to watch them, if you don't shut them down they'll come at you from everywhere," he said. "Any lapses in concentration and they'll punish you."
Whether Dalefield will be at full strength won't actually be confirmed until match day. Star forward Ana-May Playle has a finger injury and while Goodin is optimistic she will play he admits there is no certainty in that respect.
Playle is an important cog in the Dalefield attacking machine because of her astute reading of the game and her ability to make the most of her scoring opportunities.
The experiment of playing Amanda Pottinger at fullback, which worked so well in the 6-0 win over Hutt a fortnight ago, will, not surprisingly, be continued tomorrow. She often intercepted passes in the Hutt match with her speed and assertiveness and could have a bright future in her new role.
Tactically, Goodin wants Dalefield to focus on maintaining their structure and on being patient when building their own attacks. "If we do the simple things well we should win, that the key," he said.
The Dalefield men's team are also at home to Victoria University in a Wellington premier division match tomorrow and coach Mark Fenwick is delighted that both talented youngster Ben Van Woerkom and goalkeeper Alan Brady will be back in action after battling injury concerns.
Van Woerkom will add punch to the attack while Brady's vast experience is invaluable in goal.
Like their women's side the University men are at their most dangerous in broken play and so Fenwick believes the secret to a Dalefield success lies in their ability to be accurate in their passing and sure in their tackling. "It's pretty basic stuff when it all boils down, keep the errors to a minimum and we have a real chance of an upset.".
