It was a familiar story for Dalefield when they were beaten 3-2 by Northern United in their Wellington premier division men's hockey match at the National Hockey Stadium in Wellington on Saturday.
Following a costly trend recently, Dalefield had the greater number of scoring opportunities but were not able to find the back of the net enough to secure victory.
"Quite honestly we played some really good hockey but when you miss probably four to five gettable shots at goal you are always going to make it hard for yourselves," Dalefield player-coach Willie Schaefer said.
Making the loss even more frustrating for Dalefield was the fact that Northern United - who rely on strong defence - scored all three of their goals from counter attacks launched from inside their own territory.
"We turned over ball and then didn't make the transition from attack to defence quickly enough," Schaefer said. "We reacted too slowly and paid the penalty for it."
Dane Lett and Todd Gould scored the goals for Dalefield who trailed 1-2 at halftime.
