Dalefield are still upbeat about their chances of making the semifinals of the Wellington premier division men's hockey competition.
That's despite being on a six-match losing streak and sitting bottom of the points table on 6pts, 4pts behind fifth-placed Victoria University and 5pts behind fourth-placed Northern United.
"We've had a good talk about it and we think we can still make the semis," player-coach Willie Schaefer said yesterday. "Yes, we're on the back foot now but things can change pretty quickly, we're not out of it yet."
Schaefer is intent on his side starting their fightback at the National Hockey Stadium tomorrow when they play Victoria University.
It will be the third time these two sides have met this season and while Victoria University won the first 5-3 and the second 5-1 Schaefer is confident Dalefield can turn the tables on this occasion.
"They [University] are a good side but we can take them, it's just a matter of playing well and getting a bit of luck at the same time," he said.
The Dalefield squad will be missing their age group players, Hugh Taylor, Nick Finlayson, Joseph Robertson and Mitchell Blackwood, who will be representing Wairarapa at either an under-18 tournament in Hawke's Bay or an under-15s tourney at Clareville.
