Dalefield will have to do without two of their regular players, Jesse Workman and Mark Scully, for the remainder of this season's Wellington premier division men's hockey campaign.
New Zealand Maori rep Workman and Scully are both now playing their club hockey in Manawatu, probably with an eye to representing that province at national league level.
Coach Mark Fenwick admits Dalefield will miss the experience of the two players but his disappointment has been tempered to an extent by the news that former New Zealand age group and Wellington senior representative player Daniel Juno has joined his squad.
Fenwick intends to play Juno in the important centre half role when Dalefield takes on Northern United at Clareville tomorrow and he is hopeful he will provide the quality of service which allows star forward Rowan Yeo to demonstrate his skills in the goal scoring department.
Fenwick is also optimistic that Dalefield will give a Northern United team which will welcome the return of former Wairarapa and Wellington rep Jamie Schaefer something to think about.
The last time the two teams met Northern United won 6-3 and Fenwick says Dalefield are capable of pushing them even closer on this occasion. "We have a habit of playing some of our best hockey against them and hopefully nothing will change in that respect," he said.
Victory looks a strong possibility for the Dalefield women in their premier division match with Karori, also at Clareville tomorrow.
Currently Dalefield sit third on the points table with 12 points, well clear of Karori on three, and their first round clash resulted in a 3-0 Dalefield win. Statistics also indicate that Karori has a leaky defence with 19 goals already having been conceded. With that in mind a Dalefield attack which has netted 16 goals so far this season could have a field day.
Dalefield coach Rochelle Retter, is however, mindful of her squad being weakened by the absence of Wairarapa under-16 reps Chloe Stevens and Libby Noema and the possibility that Georgia Burton and Megan Parker could be missing as well. Also she respects Karori as a team with the potential to upset any of the teams above them on the points table. "We should win but it won't happen without a good performance," she said. "Any complacency could cost us big time."
Wairarapa teams continue to call the tune in the premier grade of the Wellington secondary schools competitions. Wairarapa College have won four from four in the boys division, scoring 33 goals and conceding just one. In the girls division St Matthews have won four from four (26 goals for and one against) and Wairarapa College three from three (25 goals for and one against)&.hugely impressive reading by anybody's standards.
