Dalefield scored a deserved 4-2 win over defending champions Northern United in their Wellington premier division men's hockey match at Clareville on Saturday.
Coach Willie Schaefer attributed his team's success to their ability to stick to a game plan which revolved around using the full width of the pitch and exposing perceived weaknesses in the opposition halfline.
"We knew there were certain areas where we could attack them and we did that well," Schaefer said. "We managed to turn over a whole lot of ball and we generally made good use of it."
Dalefield scored two goals in each half, leading 2-1 at the break, and always looked in control with Trent Lett and Jackson Kibblewhite both having fine games.
They were always solid in defence and linked well with their supports in attacking situations.
The same could be said of the ever-reliable Dane Lett, whose tactical nous allowed him to be in the right place at the right time while both Todd Gould and Jesse Workman were prominent in the forward line.
Saturday's match saw Dalefield play a different goalkeeper in each half . Both Orin Lockyer, who returned from injury, and Lindsay Brazendale served their team well.
