Dalefield Black has history on their side when they meet Red Star in the final of the Wairarapa division one women's hockey competition at Clareville tomorrow.
In two previous meetings this season is has been Dalefield Black who has triumphed so little wonder they are favoured to have the edge again.
Interestingly enough, however, Dalefield Black were made to work harder than generally anticipated when they defeated Featherston 3-1 in the semi-finals last weekend.
On that occasion Featherston shared the possession and it was only Dalefield Black's better finish to their attacking movements which spelt the difference in the end result.
No doubt Red Star, which also had to battle hard for their 2-1 victory over Dalefield Dazzlers in the other semi, will be hoping to create doubt in the Dalefield Black minds by taking an early lead.
In the likes of Kylie Henderson, Paula Thomson, Kim Stewart, Hayley Jones, Helen Gibbs and Julie Spring they have a nucelus of players with the skills and temperament to rise to the occasion.
Dalefield Black, on the other hand, will also be keen to start well and dampen the Red Star enthusiasm by dominating possession and territory. College students Harriet Cameron and Stephanie Sloan give impetus to their attack and they also benefit from the experience of former rep players such as Tracey Donald, Leanne Daley, Justine Robertson and Anne-Marie Nikolaison.
If Red Star do happen to win the women's final it could be the start of a huge day of celebration for their club as later on their men's team will meet Harlequins in the final of their division one series.
