Dalefield came right back into the reckoning for a semifinals berth when they walloped Victoria University 5-1 in their Wellington premier division men's hockey match at the National Hockey Stadium in Wellington on Saturday.
The win meant Dalefield are still at the bottom of the six-team competition but they now have nine points, just one less than fifth-placed University and two less than fourth-placed Northern United. The two previous meetings between Dalefield and University this season had seen the students claim the major spoils but on this occasion Dalefield raced out to a 3-0 lead by halftime.
Player-coach Willie Schaefer: "Obviously it was great to come away with a good result but, quite honestly, we have been playing better than that," Schaefer said. "It got a bit scrappy at times, we weren't quite as consistent as we would have liked to be."
Scorers for Dalefield were Jesse Workman, Greg Mason, Chris Mason, Trent Lett and Todd Gould, while Trent Lett was outstanding.
