Dalefield celebrated the official opening of the $1m water turf at Clareville with a stunning 2-2 draw with Indians in their Wellington premier division women's hockey match on Saturday.
It was a superb performance by Dalefield against an Indians team which had beaten them twice in previous matches this season and is second behind Eastern Hutt on the competition table.
The Dalefield tactics of adopting an "in your face" approach both on attack and defence often had Indians rattled, particularly in a first half which ended with Dalefield deservedly holding a 2-1 lead.
The home team scored first when Libby Noema found clear space in front of the Indians goal and rocketed the ball home.
Indians then replied with a well-taken goal after they had turned over possession and launched a counter attack but Dalefield had the last say in the half when Janeen Bruce capitalised on a rebound from the pads of the Indians goalkeeper.
The second spell was something of a see-saw affair with both teams creating good scoring opportunities but the only goal was scored by Indians about 15 minutes after the resumption of play.
Dalefield coach Nigel Goodin was justifiably delighted by his team's display before a large and appreciative crowd, especially considering they were without two of their regulars, Jade Foreman and Brook Taylor, who were both down with the 'flu bug which had struck the squad over the past week or so.
One or two others who played were also struggling fitness-wise and prompted Goodin to make some positional changes early in the second half, something which he freely concedes might not, on reflection, have been the wisest move on his part.
"It did disrupt our pattern to a degree and maybe it would have been better to keep things the way they were," he said.
Stand-in goalkeeper Loren Hartnell had a fine game for Dalefield, showing commendable coolness under pressure, while another to shine for her reliability on defence was Amanda Pottinger, whose consistent form all season must surely see her in the reckoning for Wellington's NHL side.
Jordan McGregor had the task of keeping Indians' Black Stick Anita Punt under wraps and did an excellent job in that respect while Janeen Bruce got through her usual power of work in every aspect of play.
There was a lot to like too about the assertiveness of Dalefield's Libby Noema and Ana-May Playle on attack with both players often eluding defenders through sheer persistence.
The Dalefield men's team also played Indians in a Wellington premier division match at Clareville on Saturday with Indians winning 11-3 after
racing out to an 8-1 lead by halftime.
"We were pretty appalling in the first half but we did compete a lot better in the second," Dalefield player Willie Schaefer said.
