Dalefield made second-placed Harbour City-Tawa work overtime for their 6-4 win in the Wellington premier division men's hockey match played at Clareville on Saturday.
The home team held a 3-1 lead in the first half and, after Harbour City-Tawa fought back to level at 3-3, they again hit the front at 4-3.
With just five minutes to play the two sides were locked at 4-4 but it was Harbour City-Tawa who had the final say, scoring from a somewhat dubious penalty corner to lead 5-4 and then adding a sixth goal with a breakaway after Dalefield had gone all out to find the equaliser.
Dalefield player-coach Willie Schaefer was frustrated Dalefield had nothing to show for their efforts but pleased with their competitiveness and, particularly, their finishing work.
"We've struggled to find the net in recent games so it was nice to get four in this time," he said.
Capital NHL rep Jesse Workman broke a brief drought by scoring one of the goals while Joseph Robertson recorded his first for Dalefield in premier division play. Others went to Dane Lett and Hugh Taylor.
Lett was a standout for Dalefield with his high workrate and Schaefer was "really pleased" with the way his side took the game to Harbour City-Tawa with well-structured attacks.
