It was sweet revenge when Dalefield beat Victoria University 4-3 in their Wellington premier division men's hockey match in Wellington on Saturday.
The two sides had met on three previous occasions with Dalefield winning the first clash and Victoria University the next two.
"We were pretty keen to get one back on them," Dalefield coach Laurie Juno said. "We're now one place ahead of them on the points table as well so that was an extra bonus for us."
Juno described Dalefield's performance as "patchy" with periods of dominance being too often followed by lapses in concentration.
"We'd be on top and everything was going well and then we'd slacken off and they'd get back into it. We weren't consistent enough overall," Juno said.
Todd Sugrue opened the scoring for Dalefield in the opening minutes of the game only to have University equalise soon after, Then Daniel Juno scored to give Dalefield a 2-1 halftime lead.
A comfortable Dalefield win looked likely when Geoff Ewington goaled to put them 3-1 up in the second spell but University was allowed to regroup and they scored two goals in relatively quick succession to level up again at 3-3.
It was Mark Scully who netted the winning Dalefield goal about 15 minutes from the end of play and they staved off further University assaults despite being down to 10 men when Daniel Juno was sin binned.
Outstanding for Dalefield on defence was Chris Mason and Ewington was the pick of their attack.
