KEY POINTS:
Sandeep Kaur and Hardeep Singh bought their dairy in Ohope Beach, near Whakatane, only five months ago, but already it has been named Tip Top Icecream Parlour of the Year.
Ms Kaur and Mr Singh, who have a 10-month-old baby and another on the way, are delighted at the award.
The couple rolled 40,000 more scoops of icecream this summer than their sales target for the season.
"Sometimes when it's busy, we all have sore hands and wrists," Ms Kaur said.
Ms Kaur, 28, and her 29-year-old husband moved to New Zealand from India three years ago. They initially ran a liquor store in Auckland, but bought the Ohope dairy after Mr Singh decided he wanted to escape the crowds in the city - a decision neither regrets. "This is a beautiful place," Ms Kaur said.
And while the country has enjoyed its hottest summer in a decade, the number of icecreams sold has jumped dramatically.
Tip Top has sold 6.6 million scoops in dairies this summer - an increase of more than 400,000 scoops from the previous summer.
