The man killed when his car and a truck collided on a main highway north of Auckland on Thursday was Mark Joseph Davey, 23, from Auckland.
Police said Mr Davey was driving west on State Highway 17 near Dairy Flat about 3.10pm on Thursday when his car inexplicably swerved into the oncoming truck and trailer unit, killing him instantly.
The truck driver was not hurt.
Police said it was not known why the car crossed the centre line. Road conditions were good and there did not appear to be anything wrong with the car.
