Kelly threatened to kill the victim as he knocked him unconscious.
"He yelled he was going to kill him as he banged his head on the step."
The victim's wife intervened and was also hit before Kelly got in his car and left the scene of the attack, he said.
The assaulted man suffered cuts to his head, grazes to his knees and was taken to hospital for treatment.
Kelly admitted the assault, Mr Wilson told the court.
"He stated he was angry because he had hit his son earlier in the day. He said he wasn't remorseful."
Defence lawyer Peter Stevens said his client had not hit the victim's wife - only pushed her away.
"He does not have a history of this manner."
Judge Morris remanded Kelly on bail for a pre-sentence report to assist with sentencing on February 3 but warned him jail was a possibility.
"All options are available to the court ... he is at risk of imprisonment," she said.
